2040 is a hybrid feature documentary that looks to the future, but is vitally important NOW!
The 2040 journey began with award-winning director Damon Gameau (That Sugar Film). Motivated by concerns about the planet his 4-year-old daughter would inherit, Damon embarked on a global journey to meet innovators and changemakers in the areas of economics, technology, civil society, agriculture, education and sustainability. Drawing on their expertise, he sought to identify the best solutions, available to us now, that would help improve the health of our planet and the societies that operate within it. From marine permaculture to decentralised renewable energy projects, he discovered that people all over the world are taking matters into their own hands.
This journey is the central premise for the documentary ‘2040’, a story of hope that looks at the very real possibility that humanity could reverse global warming and improve the lives of every living thing in the process. It is a positive vision of what ‘could be’, instead of the dystopian future we are so often presented.

Wie könnte unsere Zukunft im Jahr 2040 aussehen? Wie können wir nachfolgenden Generationen eine lebenswerte Welt hinterlassen, den CO2-Ausstoß begrenzen und was können wir gegen den Klimawandel tun? Der preisgekrönte Filmemacher Damon Gameau begibt sich auf eine Reise um die Welt auf der Suche nach Antworten auf diese drängenden Fragen. Und er findet dabei zahlreiche erstaunliche Ansätze und bereits verfügbare Lösungen. Bis 2040 könnte das Zusammenleben auf der Erde nachhaltig verbessert werden, wenn Haushalte ihre eigene Energie herstellen, wenn der Autoverkehr durch Sharing-Modelle und selbstfahrende Autos ersetzt und Platz für Parkanlagen und Urban Gardening frei wird. Die Landwirtschaft könnte mit neuen Methoden einen erheblichen Beitrag leisten und den CO2-Spiegel in der Atmosphäre senken und auch im Meer könnten wir der akuten Bedrohung entgegenwirken. Wir müssen nur bereit sein, jetzt gemeinsam für eine bessere Welt zu arbeiten und neue Wege einzuschlagen. Mit verantwortungsvollem Handeln können wir eine lebenswertere Welt erschaffen.

What outcomes does the project hope to achieve from making this documentary?
2040 is an entry point into a much larger world of climate solutions that are already within reach. From regenerative seaweed farming to community energy projects, people are taking matters into their own hands and creating innovative solutions to climate change.
Screenings are the catalyst for audience groups to come together to discuss what needs to be done locally and globally to reverse climate change and transition to new systems that safeguard the planet for future generations. Our diverse screening partners will bring communities together to discuss the existing solutions to climate change. Screenings in schools, community settings, workplaces and institutions are supported with free tool-kits and curriculum materials to build capacity to develop local action groups, projects and campaigns.
